For millions of years, plants have been in a mutualistic, symbiotic relationship with a group of soil organisms called Mycorrhizal Fungi. Serving as a secondary life support system, these unique fungi live in and around the roots of almost 99% of Earth’s terrestrial plants. By attaching themselves to the roots of a plant, the Mycorrhizae can extend out into the soil, gathering water and nutrients for the host in exchange for the plant’s sugars. Trees, plants and crops with abundant Mycorrhizae colonies are better able to adapt and flourish in harsh and stressful man-made environments.
Besides Mycorrhizae Fungi, there are certain species of beneficial bacteria that support healthy plant growth and help protect them from certain soil-born diseases. These good bacteria are call Tricoderma, Bacillus and Rhizobacteria. These valuable bacteria are common in a forest floor in natural settings. However, in man-made environments, the populations of these species are low or even non-existent. These microbial colonies are measured as CFU’s, colony forming units. To help alleviate this lack of both Mycorrhizae and beneficial bacteria in urban type settings, special cocktails of products have been made containing the endo / ectomycorrhizae and the beneficial bacteria, as well as an array of micronutrients, biostimulants, soil conditioners, super-absorbent gels, amino acids and vitamins & minerals.
Ectomycorrhizae:
Species of mycorrhizal fungi with hyphae that grow only between the cells and over the surface (outside) of the roots, but do not penetrate the plant cell. Benefits conifers, hardwoods and most crops.
Endomycorrhizae:
Species of mycorrhizae fungi with hyphae that penetrate and live inside the cortical cells of the plant’s root. Benefits turfgrasses, hardwoods, most ornamentals, shrubs, crops, and fruit & nut trees.
Peptides:
(Although peptides are not microbes they must be included in the discussion with these products.) “Plant Stimulating Peptides” contain a great number of potential atoms as an enzyme block chain, able to form strong bonds with the metal. To these bonds, which guarantee the greater stability, is to be added the ability of some side chains of amino acids, forming peptides, to bind the metal through different types of forces, which contribute to further increase the stability of the peptide-metal bond. Thanks to these multiple interactions, the peptides take a 3D dimension, and they organize close to the metal, to form a fence around it and ensuring that the metal atom becomes part of a strong and biologically stable ring structure. The resulting structure, called biochelateTM, improves the solubility and bioavailability of the element, which becomes readily available for plant uptake greatly increasing a plant’s metabolism.
